If you’re looking for a new cell phone, then you’ve probably come across lots of advertisements declaring “all we do is unlock mobile phones”;
but then you’ve probably also heard of the option to buy a phone already unlocked and skip the middle man altogether.
Many people ask us what’s better, buying a cell phone through a carrier and then getting it unlocked or buying a pre-unlocked phone.
Well, that depends on a number of factors.
First, ask yourself whether or not you would like to commit yourself to a long-term service plan with a single provider.
Mobile carriers offer great prices on their cell phones,
but that’s only as long as you are willing to sign a long-term binding contract for a service and payment plan.
This would mean that even if you choose to unlock that phone, changing carrier would probably be useless,
as you’d still be committed to the carrier that provided you with the device.
If however changing carriers while under your original provider is still worth it,
know that unlocking a pre-installed phone may yet cause it to malfunction or even render it useless.
This may happen with phones where some of the original carrier settings haven’t been removed correctly from the device,
or if it hasn’t been properly hacked.
The other option is to purchase a new unlocked phone, without any carrier settings.
While it usually costs more, only this way you could be absolutely positive that your new phone would work on any GSM provider.
The best part of it is the freedom of choice and the ability to change providers,
without binding contracts– which in the long run would probably save you the money you surely would’ve spent on long-term service plans.
